My skills: a retrospective

Hello my fellow bloggers today I am doing a recap on my Trimester and the skills I have improved over the tri. I have worked on two games this trimester which are still in the prototype phase and I shall discuss them separately.

Maze game

My first assignment was that I had to make a game with similar mechanics to Super Monkey Ball which has the player move the platforms to make the ball move faster. I started the assignment with confidence that I could hit every criteria and it turns out I did. I started the assignment a week late and because of that I was unable to add polish in the final week. I tried to keep a steady routine of work but it was about half way thru I became so interested I started working for hours at a time. In conclusion I loved this assignment so much I plan to keep working on it and put it on the android app store for the LOL’s as a free to play game but my only regret is that didn’t spend more time working on it.

Real Time Strategy

The second game I made was a squad based RTS with cutscenes and some ability to save. In all honesty I was freaking out because I have never done that kind of programing before. Once I started my game I gained a bit more confidence and I started planning what kind of game I’ll make. I originally planed to make a stealth squad game with only four characters that had individual abilities and stats. But I quickly realised that was way out of my current skill level. So I settled on a squad of four slimes with custom animations because I had learnt how to make slimes in class. I am disappointed with myself because I used my teachers code that controls the squad without editing the script to suit my needs and make it more of my script. I was surprised I managed to the cutscenes working with a little help because I hadn’t started working on them till late. In conclusion I struggled with this project due to my lack of experience as a programer but I will try to get better so I don’t have to rely on other people in future projects.
