Hello once again and this time I will be discussing different camera perspectives in video games and how they have been used in video games. These perspectives are 2D side scroller, 3D open world, Isometric camera and top down. Each has its own charm and can be used with a tone of different genres.

2D games were everywhere back in the 80 due to the technology at the time. But there was allot of amazing games made back then like Super Mario, Street Fighter and Castlevania. The player usually will move right to left but some games like Castlevania and Metroid had to navigate the levels to find objects to clear the level.

3D games was the next evolution of gaming dew to the shift of using 2D sprites to 3D polygons. 3D is now common in the game industry with big worlds and amazing graphics. Games like Skyrim, Halo, and Uncharted. There are a lot of genres of games that use 3D environments like Halo which is a FPS that involves completing objectives to pass the level. Skyrim is a sand box game that involves the player to do a lot of exploring.

An Isometric camera is similar to a Top down but it’s on a 45 degree angle. Isometric camera is used to add depth and show the playable space and to make game objects to look 3D. Isometric games can range from MOBA’s to RPG’s and also RTS’s like League of Legends, Diablo and Command & Conquer.

Top down games have the camera directly above the player witch only shows his head and shoulders. Some games put in items on a side perspective witch give it an Isometric look. Games like Legend of Zelda and Pokémon made the Top down perspective great.
